Dr. Sara Klose (formerly Mahdizadeh) is a veterinary microbiologist with a wealth of program management experience and a foundation in molecular biology, genomics, and metabolomics. Her track record includes groundbreaking work during her PhD, where she investigated the molecular pathogenesis of mycoplasmas and developed an innovative CRISPR technique for genome engineering of these microorganisms.

Sara played a pivotal role in coordinating and executing a research project at the Asia Pacific Centre of Animal Health (APCAH) in collaboration with the Disease Control Group of the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries. During this project, she made significant contributions to New Zealand's Mycoplasma bovis eradication programme. Additionally, Sara contributed to an Australian Research Council-funded project focused on studying the MS-H live vaccine, essential for protection against M. synoviae, a poultry pathogen.

Her project management skills shone as she oversaw logistics, budgeting, and problem-solving in multiple projects. Leading the collection of samples from European mycoplasma diagnostic laboratories, Sara created an archive of over 100 MS-H vaccine isolates, facilitating comprehensive studies. Utilising genomic and metabolomic approaches, she delved into the stability of the MS-H vaccine in poultry farms and efficiently managed large-scale poultry clinical trials, demonstrating expertise from ethics applications to translational application. She established compliant laboratory systems and took on the responsibility of overseeing a Research Assistant, handling funds acquisition, budget management, hiring, training, and supervision.

Currently based in Germany, Sara is actively involved in multiple projects. She co-leads Working Package 1 of the MyMIC project, a global industry-funded initiative focused on standardising antimicrobial susceptibility testing for animal mycoplasmas. Additionally, she collaborates on an Australian Research Council-funded project aimed at enhancing vaccine efficacy against mycoplasmas, leveraging her earlier CRISPR system development. Serving as the co-investigator of an industry-funded project, Sara investigates co-infection dynamics between Feline Herpesvirus (FHV1) and bacterial pathogens in feline cells, contributing to the overall health and welfare of cats.
